ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (AP) - A Virginia sheriff’s captain was indicted this week on a rape charge following a State Police investigation that began in 2019, news outlets reported, citing the agency.
Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Julian D. Evans, 50, was charged Monday with rape of a victim having mental incapacity or helplessness, according to a statement from Virginia State Police that was obtained by news outlets. He was being held in jail and made a first court appearance Tuesday.
Sheriff James R. Clarke Jr. announced in September that a criminal allegation had been made against an unidentified sheriff’s office employee, The Daily Press reported at the time. He said then that the employee was placed on administrative leave, but Evans’ employment status following the indictment was unclear.
Evans told a judge Tuesday he hired a lawyer to represent him, but the lawyer hasn’t publicly commented on Evans’ behalf.
An arraignment was set for April 13.
