PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A 51-year-old man pulling a cart full of groceries across a Providence street has been struck and killed by a vehicle, police said.
Timothy McGann was struck at about 8 p.m. Tuesday near the apartment complex where he lives, Cmdr. Thomas Verdi said. Responding officers found McGann lying in the street with a head wound being tended to by a passer-by.
There is a grocery store in the vicinity.
McGann was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The 42-year-old driver stopped at the scene. He told police he saw the shopping cart in the middle of the street and veered to avoid it, and struck McGann instead.
It does not appear alcohol or speed was a factor, Verdi said.
The death remains under investigation.
