MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A former police chief from New Mexico will become the new chief of police in Vermont’s capital city, officials announced Wednesday.

Brian Peete, 44, who served as police chief in Alamogordo, New Mexico, will start on June 15, working alongside retiring Montpelier Police Chief Anthony Facos, City Manager William Fraser said. He will officially assume the position on July 1.

Peete said he was excited to work with “people of integrity who are focused on progression, inclusion, transparency, community partnership, and growth,” the city said.

Peete served in the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant, captain, an assistant special agent in charge, and a region manager for the Office of Special Investigations. He then worked for the Chicago Police Department as a crime prevention and information center analyst, a field training officer, and a patrolman.

He was chosen as Montpelier’s police chief from 19 candidates, Fraser said.

He left the department in a difficult resignation process, Fraser said. Peete filed a complaint in court against the city and former city manager alleging breach of covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and violating whistleblower protections, the Alamogordo Daily News reported. He resigned in November after a failed mediation session with the city, the paper reported.
