LOS ANGELES (AP) - A man was arrested for allegedly shooting at Los Angeles police officers, authorities said Friday.

The officers were responding to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon on Thursday when they saw possible suspects and ran after them, a Police Department statement said.

“At least one of the suspects shot at the officers while in foot pursuit,” it said. “Officers did not return fire. Fortunately, neither of the officers were struck by gunfire.”

Several suspects were detained and an AR-15-type rifle was found along with ballistic evidence of a shooting, the department said.

Quamontae Smith, 25, was arrested and booked for investigation of attempted murder.

Online county jail records show he was being held on $1 million bail. It was not immediately known if he had a lawyer.
