CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) - The parents of a 1-year-old girl were charged with her death after fentanyl was found in her system, South Carolina authorities said.
Donovan Marshall Wright, 27, and Taylor Cheyenne Metz, 31, were charged with unlawful neglect of a child, news outlets reported.
The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office said the baby was taken to the hospital on June 14, where she later died.
According to an incident report, the baby was fed from a bottle and fell asleep for several hours. When an adult touched the baby’s leg, it was cold, the report said.
Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan said the fentanyl found in the baby’s system prompted the charge.
“There’s no reason a child should have fentanyl in their system. The parents were in charge of the child, the child was with them in their care so we did make the charge,” said Boan.
Wright and Metz were scheduled for a bond hearing Wednesday. It’s unclear whether the couple had an attorney who could comment on their behalf.
