BLAIR, Neb. (AP) - The mother of a 14-year-old boy who was driving during a crash that killed another teenager has been sentenced to 3.5 years probation and eight days in jail.

Makayla Maguire, 35, of Blair, was sentenced last week after pleading no contest to two counts of negligent child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, both misdemeanors, The Omaha World-Herald reported. She also was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.

Her son, Dylan Maguire, was driving when his car crashed in a field near Blair on July 5, 2019, killing 14-year-old Heidy Martinez, also of Blair. Investigators said Dylan Maguire lost control of the car, which went into a field and rolled.

Four other teenagers, all 13 or 14, were in the car.

Dylan Maguire was sentenced earlier this month to probation until November 2023, when he turns 19. He is not allowed to have a driver’s license until his probation ends.

Dylan had a school permit that allowed him to drive unsupervised between school and home.
