COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina again saw more COVID-19 cases, more people in the hospital with the virus and the highest percentage of positive tests in a day, health officials said Saturday.

More than 1,150 new cases were reported as more than 23,750 people have been infected in South Carolina since the outbreak began in March, the Department of Health and Environmental Control reported.

More than 16% of the people tested had the virus. Health officials said when that figure rises, it is one of their strongest indicators the virus is spreading. That figure was just over 9% two weeks ago.

Health officials reported five additional deaths in South Carolina. COVID-19 has killed 644 people in the state.

One other trend bothering health officials is an increase in cases in young people. About 18% of all COVID-19 cases in the state are in people 21 to 30 and teenagers make up 7% of cases, DHEC said.
