JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A sergeant in the Mississippi National Guard was fatally shot at an apartment complex.
Jackson police said Sgt. Stephen Matory, 24, was killed Thursday morning when gunshots were fired at Summer Park Apartments, news outlets reported. Matory was a bystander during the shooting, police said.
The Mississippi National Guard said in a statement they were “devastated” by his death.
“This young soldier was a rising star in our ranks. He was a soldier’s soldier,” Lt. Col. Deidre D. Smith told The Clarion Ledger.
