A few big-name football players recently announced that they will kneel during the national anthem this footbal season (“Despite far more support, kneeling might not be widespread,” Web, June 11). Evidently they believe their actions will restore love off the field and bring racial harmony to the fruited plains.

Note to the brave race warriors in the NFL: Americans have moved beyond the media-hyped spectacle of taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem. Americans turn away from this display regardless of the game, league or media coverage and saturation. No one holds Colin Kaepernick up as some racial hero, and most couldn’t care less whether he gets to play quarterback again.

It’s not that Americans are racists; they are just tired of watching players direct sporting events both nationally and internationally in order to get their names in the spotlight. We realize there are better ways to work toward racial unity, and one of the first ways is to stop making a stink for personal notoriety.

We are not opposed to freedom of expression or difference of opinion, and we will fight for these rights. We just won’t be watching the media-stirred theatrics anymore.
