OPINION:
Some Democratic politicians are calling for the removal of what they deem offensive symbols. If they are right that we must remove all everything that hurts anyone’s feelings, then we must get rid of any mention or name on any federal building of the late Sen. Robert Byrd, Ku Klux Klan member. Let us remove, too, the name of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who unlawfully arrested and ordered the imprisonment of American citizens during World War II because of their heritage.
We must also do away with any mention of Spanish or Portuguese explorers, because these men were the main slave traders and the conquerers of the Indians in the Americas. Then we must remove any reference to the American Indians who killed and made slaves of other American Indians.
While we’re at it, maybe we should wipe out any reference to countries, including those in Africa, that took and sold other people into slavery. Maybe we should also list all the black slave owners in early America and the number of slaves they owned, then hold their descendants up to scorn and humiliation.
How far are Americans willing to go with this so-called fairness?
