One of the most important things I ever learned was to ask myself what my part I played in any disagreement or turmoil in which I found myself. I trained myself to take time before I jumped into a rant of blame and demanded correction I felt was owed me by the other party.

Today we have the very upsetting calls to disband or defund the police. Before we go further with criticizing them and enforcing “our” ideas for changes, we must ask ourselves what part we play in how our behavior has been threatening rather than corrective. This is a most important question because today’s police face such an array of truly villainous behavior — from terrorists to abusers, from self-righteous individuals to illegals, and generally from an uneducated and unpolished population. There is precious little civility in our culture today. Ah, for a William Wilberforce to foster higher moral standards.

If I had a child or grandchild keen to go into law enforcement, I would encourage them to join the military, not the domestic policing services. At least in the military you have more control over dangerous situations, with no self-proclaimed do-gooders or whiners critiquing your efforts.
