BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - Two people have survived a crash after the car they were in went down a 35-foot (10.6 meter) embankment early Wednesday in Mississippi.

The crash happened about 4 a.m. in Harrison County. Investigators said the vehicle left Interstate 49 at an intersection and traveled down an embankment, crashing into several trees, WLOX-TV reported.

The accident shut down the highway’s southbound lanes for almost two hours while fire crews rescued the driver and a passenger, Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan said. It’s unclear how severe the victims’ injuries are but they were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
