CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice has awarded more than $7 million in grants for community projects in 27 counties.

Justice and state Transportation Secretary Byrd White unveiled the Transportation Alternatives and Recreational Trails Program grants on Monday.

The governor’s office said in a news release that the program is funded by the Federal Highway Administration. They help communities build and improve sidewalks, lighting and rail trails.

Byrd said some projects will make sidewalks more accessible to handicapped people.

Among the largest grants, $625,000 each will go toward street projects in Barboursville and Ranson, $500,000 will be used to build a path along state Route 480 in Shepherdstown and nearly $500,000 apiece will go toward improvements in Nitro and Thomas.
