COVID-19 has won its battle with America by forfeiture. Our leaders put us in the hands of so-called experts whose opinions have trampled on our rights and done unnecessary and unprecedented damage to our country. We thought these experts’ opinions were based on hard scientific evidence, but they were guessing based on models generated by inadequate data. They should be disciplined and the politicians who heeded them dealt with accordingly come November.

A major cause of this tragedy was the failure to understand different kinds of science. There is physical science, such as physics and chemistry, which are based on hard facts, and then life sciences, such as biology and medicine, in which far fewer facts are known. The mistake with COVID-19 is that it was treated as physical science and experts’ opinions on it taken as gospel.

Ordering a total lockdown of the country based on science fiction was tragic, but the larger tragedy is that the government agreed to it. Citizens should have spoken up and government should have shown judgement and respect for our founding principles. It would have made more senseto first limit the lockdown to those over age 70 and in poor health, and second to have businesses and schools stay open with social distancing, masks and hand washing practiced.

Thes so-called experts to whom our government listened tend to regiment science and control it. We must remember that they are human and can be wrong (which we now know they were, about the virus and the extent of the lockdown).

We are now smothered by government and have gladly given up our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — at the whim of Washington. The man for whom our capital is named is surely turning over in his grave in disgust from what has happened to America.
