LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - An officer responding Friday to a report of a man with a gun in central Kentucky shot and wounded the subject, police said.

The officer found a man matching the description of the person reported and told him to stop and show his hands, Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said. The man did not heed the orders and fled on foot, Weathers said. There was a brief foot pursuit and the officer fired on the man, who was taken to a hospital for treatment, the chief said.

The reason the officer, who is white, fired at the 26-year-old Black man will be part of the investigation, Weathers said, but it appears the officer followed police protocol.

A gun believed to belong to the subject was recovered at the scene, police said in a statement.

The subject is facing charges of fleeing and evading, being a felon in possession of a firearm, menacing, and trafficking in a controlled substance, the statement said.

The officer was not injured and has been placed on administrative assignment while Kentucky State Police investigate the shooting, Weathers said.
