TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A county prosecutor’s office temporarily took over operations of a third police department in New Jersey since June, saying it was investigating misconduct.
The Union County prosecutor’s office said Wednesday it was taking control of the police department in Clark Township, a municipality south of Newark.
Acting Union County Prosecutor Lyndsay V. Ruotolo did not provide any information about the misconduct allegations in a statement.
This is the third police department in Union County that the county prosecutor’s office has taken over since June. As the chief law enforcement officer in the county, the prosecutor can take over law enforcement responsibilities of police departments in the county.
In July, an audio recording of the police chief in Fanwood making derogatory remarks about the former county prosecutor and New Jersey’s attorney general was published online. The chief resigned, prompting the county prosecutor’s office to temporarily take over law enforcement operations there.
In June, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office temporarily took over the Hillside police department when the town’s mayor refused to reinstate the police chief after suspending him, New Jersey Advance Media reported.
Ruotolo said she would make the findings of her office’s investigation into misconduct at the police department in Clark Township public.
