HONOLULU (AP) - The number of new COVID-19 cases in Hawaii hit a new daily high of 55 on Thursday as the number of deaths related to the disease rose by one to 26.

The previous high for daily new cases was 42, marked on July 11.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park said most cases occurred as a result of people socializing while not wearing masks or maintaining distance.

Dr. Bruce Anderson, the state health director, said the new cases affect all walks of life and varied professions.

He said the state may have to re-impose restrictions if case numbers don’t trend in the right direction.

“No one wants that to happen and this is why it is so critical that everyone does their part, every day, every place in practicing safety for the sake of the health of all in Hawaii,” Anderson said in a statement.

Hawaii has had among the lowest number of cases per capita in the United States, thanks to a 14-day quarantine requirement imposed on travelers arriving from out of state and relative widespread use of masks and other safety measures.
