TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Grevy’s zebra that was born on July 4 at a Tucson zoo has died from a possible spinal injury, authorities said.

Reid Park Zoo officials said the foal was found lying next to his mother on Monday.

Initial radiographs show a fracture in the cervical spine, but zoo officials are uncertain of the nature of the injury or how the zebra sustained it.

A full necropsy will be performed to get a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding the injury.

Zoo staff said the foal was seen running and jumping Sunday as he explored his surroundings.

Grevy’s are the largest zebra species and are endangered.

Over the last 40 years, the species population has dropped significantly with fewer than 2,000 remaining in the wild.
