HONOLULU (AP) - The number of Hawaii coronavirus infections rose to 1,381 on Sunday with the addition of new cases on Oahu and Hawaii island, state health officials said.

The state Department of Health said there were 26 new cases on Oahu and two on the Big Island Sunday, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

The state’s coronavirus death toll remained at 24.

There were 316 infections in Hawaii on Sunday of people known to be currently infected. One previous case from Honolulu was removed from the total following updated information, officials said.

Health officials have classified 1,043 patients people as meeting the criteria to be released from isolation, or about 75% of those infected, with 24 new patient releases reported Sunday.

The number of statewide coronavirus cases Sunday included 1,065 on Oahu, 135 in Maui County, 113 on Hawaii island, and 43 in Kauai County, health officials said.

The statewide count includes 22 Hawaii residents diagnosed outside of the state and three cases pending residency identification.

There have been 150 coronavirus cases in Hawaii requiring hospitalization since the beginning of the pandemic, with 10 new hospitalizations reported on Oahu Sunday, health officials said.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. But for some - especially older adults and people with existing health problems - it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.
