The Washington Redskins won’t be the Washington Redskins in “Madden NFL 21.”
Electronic Arts, the developer of the popular football video game, said this year’s edition will feature a “generic Washington team” instead of using the Redskins’ imagery while Washington searches for a new name.
Washington said last week it would retire its name and logo following the conclusion of its ongoing review.
The video game company is updating the game before its scheduled Aug. 25 release to make sure there are no references to “Redskins,” including in-game commentary, graphic packages and logos.
“We are pleased to see Washington’s decision to change their team name and visual identity,” Electronic Arts said in a statement to multiple outlets. “We are quickly working to update Madden NFL 21 to feature a generic Washington team, while we await final word on the updated team name and logo design.”
