PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Police in Portsmouth have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting this week.

A news release from Portsmouth police says Javon J. Simms, 25, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, The Virginian-Pilot reported Friday.

Officers responding to a 911 call Wednesday morning for a gunshot wound in the 1000 block of Cherokee Road found Khamarl Mahs, 37, suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Simms is being held at the Portsmouth City Jail, and it’s not known if he has an attorney. Police say an investigation into the shooting is continuing.
