EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Human remains found in a shallow grave behind a restaurant in Branford have been identified as a missing East Haven women.
Lizzbeth Aleman-Popoco, 27, disappeared overnight between June 30 and July 1. Police say her 7-year-old daughter woke up to find her gone and called her father, who was at work. Most of Aleman-Popoco’s personal belongings were still inside the home when she was discovered missing.
Aleman-Popoco’s family filed a missing persons report on July 3.
Her body was found Wednesday about a 10-minute drive from Aleman-Popoco’s home. The New Haven Register reported that Aleman-Popoco’s partner, Jonnathan Jara-Aucapina, used to work at the restaurant.
The medical examiner’s office said Thursday it has not yet determined the cause of death.
East Haven police Captain Joseph Murgo said police are still investigating to determine if she was a victim of foul play.
“We’ve tried to be strong,” Yaneth Aleman, the woman’s 24-year-old sister, told reporters Thursday. “We need to find justice for her. She deserves it. She’s a good person.”
