OCALA, Fla (AP) - A Florida police officer responding to a 911 call rescued a 62-year-old man from a burning house on Friday night.

The man was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital in critical condition, Ocala police said. He had burns on his hands and was suffering from smoke inhalation.

Officer Jordan Pagano saw smoke coming from the home when he arrived there around 10:15 p.m. Friday to check out a 911 call about a fire. He found the man sitting in a chair inside the burning home, police said. Pagano was able to get the man safely out of the house.



The Ocala Star-Banner reported the man had tried to get out, but apparently became exhausted.

Tommie Scott Jr., who lives at the house with his uncle and two others told the newspaper he was watching television in his room when he noticed smoke coming from a hallway.

Scott said he saw thick smoke and flames in the home. He kept calling his uncle’s name and managed to get outside and go to a neighbor’s home to call 911.

The other residents were not home at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined. The Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives investigators were notified.
