HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut’s next chief state’s attorney was selected Thursday by the Criminal Justice Commission.

The commission announced that Stamford prosecutor Richard J. Colangelo Jr. will become Connecticut’s Chief State’s Attorney.

Colangelo will also become the chief administrative officer, leading the Division of Criminal Justice, which oversees the state’s attorney’s offices for Connecticut’s 13 judicial districts.

He will succeed former Chief State’s Attorney Kevin Kane, who retired in December after a 47-year career as a prosecutor. He had been chief state’s attorney since 2006, making him the longest-serving top prosecutor since the office was created in 1973.

Colangelo’s appointment came after a grueling, daylong series of candidate interviews Thursday. Gov. Ned Lamont commended the Commission for their selection.

“I congratulate Richard J. Colangelo, Jr. on his appointment and I look forward to working with him on efforts that bring about our unified goals of increasing the safety of every community in our state,” the governor said in a statement.

He is scheduled to be sworn into office Friday in Stamford by Supreme Court Justice Andrew McDonald, the commission chairman.
