The blast of U.S. artillery erupted on European soil for the first time in 16 years this week as commanders affirmed their “continued commitment to NATO and our collective resolve” to support regional allies.
Monday’s live-fire exercises in Grafenwoehr, Germany, were the first time Europe-based Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) units were employed since 2004.
Col. Seth Knazovich, commander of the 41st Field Artillery Brigade, witnessed the system’s performance during foggy conditions Monday.
“[The fog actually] added to their concealment,” he said, Stars and Stripes reported.
The brigade has prepped for the live-fire exercise since arriving in Europe in 2018.
“The MLRS can hit targets more than 100 miles away, though Monday’s exercise used reduced-range practice rockets,” the newspaper added.
