NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a car smashed into a pole and a tree in New Jersey, killing two women and injuring three other people, two of them critically.
Authorities said the car hit a “No parking for Street Cleaning” pole and then a tree in Newark shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
City spokeswoman Catharine Adams told NJ.com that three passengers were taken to University Hospital, where two men were reported in critical condition and a woman was in stable condition.
Adams said the accident is under investigation.
New York City television station ABC-7 reports that video from the scene showed extensive damage to the vehicle, pieces of which had to be cut away by firefighters in order to free the occupants.
