EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - Two teenage boys have died in separate incidents after they fell through the ice on ponds in central new Jersey.

In East Brunswick, three teenagers fell into a pond behind police headquarters around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Two of the boys were soon able to get themselves out and they called 911, seeking help for the third boy who was still in the pond.

Several officers ran out to the pond and formed a human chain in attempts to reach the stuck 13-year-old. The teen was eventually pulled from the water and taken to a hospital, but he was pronounced there a short time later.

Six police officers and two firefighters were treated for hypothermia, but no other injuries were reported.

The other incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, when two boys fell through the ice of a pond at a park in Carteret. One teen was able to rescue himself, but the other remained in the water until emergency responders were able to free him and take him to a hospital. He died there a short time later.

The names of the boys who died have not been released.
