WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont woman has pleaded guilty to stabbing her boyfriend after he told her he was getting back together with his ex-wife, authorities said.
Amanda Zanis, 38, accepted a plea deal Tuesday in Windsor Superior Court to charges of aggravated domestic assault, obstruction of justice and violation of her conditions of release, Valley News reported.
Zanis stabbed Pete Juricek in the shoulder with what authorities described as a bayonet-style knife, according to an affidavit filed by police.
Then, while being held behind bars, Zanis violated an order to not contact Juricek and used the phone to call him 90 times, according to a news release from Vermont State Police.
Zanis used the calls to ask the victim to tell authorities he did not remember the attack, Windsor State’s Attorney David Cahill said.
Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Mann ordered Zanis to serve the sentences concurrently, which means she will be eligible for parole after serving a year.
Defense attorney Brian Marsicovetere said Zanis client has expressed sorrow.
Cahill said that Zanis could be a threat to the community and that she needs mental health treatment once she is out on parole.
“She has trouble regulating her emotions,” Cahill said.
