OGDEN, Utah (AP) - Authorities say a teenager died after he was buried in an avalanche while snowmobiling north of Salt Lake City.

Liz Sollis, a spokeswoman for the Davis County Sheriff’s Office, tells the Standard-Examiner the 18-year-old was snowmobiling with his father in Farmington Canyon when the avalanche happened Saturday afternoon. It took search and rescue crews about half an hour to find and dig out the teen, who died at a hospital in Salt Lake City.

His name has not been released.

Sollis says the teen had an avalanche beacon and an inflatable backpack, but the backpack did not deploy. She added that the snowmobile might have triggered the slide, but weather also could have played a role.

Temperatures in the area have recently fluctuated between warm and cold.
