BOSTON (AP) - Southern New England is preparing for its first significant snowfall of 2020.

Forecasters say the snows will reach Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the late afternoon to early evening on Saturday.

Most of the region is expected to see between three to six inches of snow, with potentially as much as eight inches in remote, northwestern parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Much of Rhode Island, Boston and the Cape Cod area are expected to see up to three inches.

Winter storm warnings have been issued for parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts through early Sunday morning.

The snow isn’t expected to arrive in the western parts of the region until about 3 p.m. and closer to 6 p.m. along the coast.

Officials are warning the snow may fall up to an inch an hour and urge caution on the roads, which may become icy and slippery as snow quickly accumulates in the evening.

Temperatures will be in the teens to mid-20s most of Saturday.

The snow could turn over to sleet and then rain close to midnight as temperatures rise above freezing.
