Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont ranter, cannot win even after applying a rasp to Marxist malarkey and filing it down into a gentler version of strident governance called democratic socialism (“Bernie Sanders, the patriot: ’Our job is to build the United Nations,’” Web, Jan. 14). He cannot win even after striking a responsive chord among those who believe that most of us work in a feather factory to ensure that the wealthy nest more comfortably, a belief rejected by those Americans who work the levers of free enterprise with energy and optimism.

Mr. Sanders’ rage at those of us who are not disenchanted with our country remains as stalwart as ever, even after an encomium to the United Nations, praise which sets progressive hearts aflutter. Smiling only when skewering the wealthy and praising progressive policies is, it seems, a good-luck charm for the Burlington Brawler, and one which has become a debate-stage staple. I like the look, for I am also a septuagenarian curmudgeon, and while wrapping myself in a wholly different fabric of belief, I find persistence of error perversely admirable, if only as a lesson for Mr. Sanders’ ultimately deluded voters.
