RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina man was sentenced to more than 11 years on carjacking-related charges, federal prosecutors said.
The Raleigh-based federal prosecutor’s office announced in a news release that 22-year-old Antonio Tapia Domena received the sentence Friday in federal court.
The news release said that the crime occurred in July 2018 when three men approached a woman who was returning to her apartment early one morning.
One of the suspects brandished a firearm and pushed her to the ground, the news release said. The men demanded her belongings including car keys that they used to steal her vehicle, a 2015 Ford Escape.
Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Authorities say the three suspects then fled on foot, but Domena was arrested. Prosecutors say he was found with cash and a gun.
An attorney for Domena didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment Monday.
