OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Schools in Nebraska and Iowa cancelled after-school activities and shut down early as residents in both states braced for the latest winter storm that moved in Friday afternoon.
The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for the southeastern corner of Nebraska and southern, central and most of eastern Iowa for Friday into early Saturday. Those areas - including Fall City in Nebraska and Des Moines, Dubuque, Davenport and Burlington in Iowa - can expect high winds and up to 8 inches (20.32 centimeters) of snow. Surrounding areas, including Omaha, Nebraska, and Waterloo, Iowa, are under a winter weather advisory and can expect 2 to 4 inches (5.08 to 10.16 centimeters) of snow.
The weather service warned that the snow coupled with high winds was expected to drastically cut visibility and warned motorists to stay off roads, if possible.
In Nebraska, several school districts announced early closings in anticipation of the storm, and Omaha Public Schools cancelled after school activities for Friday.
In Iowa, the Des Moines Public Schools announced all its schools were closing two hours early Friday and cancelled all after school activities. The campaign for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders also canceled events planned Friday in central Iowa due to the winter storm warning.
