DUMMERSTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont land association is going to be getting some financial help to conserve land in the town of Dummerston and built a trail.
The Putney Mountain Association will use a $116,000 grant from the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board for the project.
The Brattleboro Reformer reported the Missing Link Project will create 6 to 8 miles of new trail from Prospect Hill in Dummerston to the Putney-Dummerston town line where it will connect to the trail network on Putney Mountain.
The project is designed to provide expanded recreational opportunities including hiking, snow shoeing, biking, hunting and other activities as the terrain and trail conditions allow.
The new trail, which passes through an old sugar bush and a 175-year-old hemlock forest, will have glimpses of Mount Monadnock to the east in New Hampshire and Haystack and Mount Snow to the west.
Two parcels along the route, totaling 55 acres, will form a critical wildlife corridor linking two 225-acre forest blocks.
