LUMBERTON, Miss. (AP) - A water pump malfunction in a southwestern Mississippi town has caused a boil water advisory and forced school officials to bring in bottled water for students.
An advisory posted to the Mississippi State Department of Health’s website said more than 2,000 customers served by the City of Lumberton in Lamar County are affected by the boil water notice. The advisory was issued Tuesday after the city reported that a booster pump had malfunctioned. Customers were advised to boil their water until further notice.
Public schools in Lumberton fall under the Lamar County School District. Superintendent Tess Smith said she instructed principals to notify parents of the advisory and that students could bring their own bottle of water but that bottled drinking water would also be available at the school.
She said the district usually has pallets of bottled water delivered when they have a boil advisory issued.
The Department of Health said on its website that the water system will be notified when tests show that it’s safe to drink the water.
