SEATTLE (AP) - Heavy rain and rising temperatures are expected in western Washington state beginning Tuesday and continuing into Thursday or Friday, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service predicts the area could receive about the same amount of rain as the previous week, KOMO-TV reported Monday.

Most of the Puget Sound lowlands are likely to experience between 1 and 3 inches (3 and 8 centimeters) of rain Tuesday through Friday, the agency said.

Forecasters also predicted 3 to 5 inches (8 to 13 centimeters) along the coast and 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters) in the Cascade Mountains and along the western slopes of the Olympic Mountains.

A landslide threat will increase while moderate or higher flooding is possible in many area rivers, streams and urban areas, officials said.

By Tuesday night, the snow level is expected to be between 1,000 and 1,500 feet (305 and 457 meters), forecasters said.

By Wednesday night, the snow level is expected to rise to between 4,000 and 6,000 feet (1,219 and 1,829 meters) in the Cascades and between 6,000 and 7,000 feet (1,829 and 2,134 meters) in the Olympics, forecasters said.
