RENO, Nev. (AP) - The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office says it is investigating the recent deaths of two Reno high school students that it says may be drug-related.
The medical examiner identified the two Damonte Ranch High School seniors Tuesday as 17-year-old Daniel Davis and 18-year-old Jacob Eckart.
Eckart was found dead at his home on Monday. Davis died after being transported to Renown Regional Medical Center on Jan. 29.
The medical examiner’s office says it is investigating in cooperation with local law enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Agency. It says the causes of the deaths have not been determined but both are possibly drug-related.
The Washoe County School District sent a note from Damonte Ranch Principal Darvel Bell to families of the school’s 1,800 students to notify them of the deaths that occurred “suddenly and unexpectedly this past week.” It included information about the availability of counseling resources.
The medical examiner said in a news release it encourages parents, teachers and others to “have frank discussions with youths regarding the dangers of narcotic drugs.”
“White powers may contain fentanyl and other synthetic opioids which can cause rapid death due to their extreme potency,” it said.
