DIKE, Iowa (AP) - A wooden box containing the cremated remains of a Dike man that was stolen in a home burglary has been recovered, authorities said Friday.
Grundy County sheriff’s deputies had reported that the cremains of 65-year-old Daniel Evanson were stolen during a break-in at his rural home sometime late Feb. 14 or early Feb. 15. Evanson died Feb. 6.
Evanson’s family members had taken to social media to plead for the public’s help in finding the remains and the ornate wooden box holding them.
On Friday, a jogger found the box of cremains on a trail in Cedar Falls, which is about 12 miles northeast of Dike, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department told WOI.
The unique box would be hard to miss, as it is adorned with a farm scene depicting a tractor and a barn. Also taken in the break-in were record albums, firearms, a television and a child-size motorcycle.
“I assume they took the box thinking it was something special and didn’t know what it contained,” Chief Deputy Sheriff Kirk Dolleslager told The Courier.
The break-in was one of several that have occurred recently in Grundy and Black Hawk counties that may be related, deputies said.
No arrests had been reported by late Friday afternoon.
