WILTON MANORS, Fla. (AP) - Wilton Manors Mayor Justin Flippen died Tuesday of a brain aneurysm while he was on his way to a city commission meeting, a medical examiner determined.

The South Florida city posted the cause of the mayor’s death on its website.

The city’s police Chief Paul O’Connell told news outlets that a call came in to his agency at 6:51 p.m. Tuesday, asking for medical assistance. Officers found his unresponsive in his car and began administering CPR. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he died.



The death is being investigated by the Broward Sheriff’s Office as a medical incident, which is routine, O’Connell said.

The call for assistance came just as the city commission was preparing to meet on Tuesday night. The meeting started without Flippen, but was quickly adjourned.

A celebration of life service is being planned for Flippen, 41, according to the city’s website.

Flippen was elected mayor in 2018 after serving as a city commissioner in Wilton Manors, which in also that year became the first city in Florida to have an all-LGBT city commission. The city, in the shadows of Fort Lauderdale. has become a tourist destination in the LGBT community.
