WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A 145-year-old water main in Delaware’s largest city ruptured Tuesday, sending water flooding into the streets in central Wilmington and forcing street closures around the historic Hotel DuPont.
City officials urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area as crews tried to stem the leak. Workers were unable to control the flow of water through valves and planned to dig into the street and plug the water main.
City officials said a preliminary review indicates that the leak involves a 20-inch main that dates to 1875.
