MULBERRY, Fla. (AP) - Two Florida men were struck and killed by a semitrailer Monday night while walking along a rural highway, authorities said.

The crash occurred along State Route 60, northwest of Mulberry, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Rafael Gandoy, 29, and Armando Melendez, 23, were walking on a paved right of way when the truck came around a curve, crossed the white fog line and hit them, deputies said. Gandoy was declared dead at the scene, and Melendez was airlifted to a Lakeland hospital, where he died, officials said.

The semi’s driver remained at the scene of the crash, which closed the road for about five hours. No charges were immediately reported.
