BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore student who was found with a loaded handgun was arrested Monday at a high school, the president of the city’s school police union said.
Two unarmed school police officers arrested the student after a struggle in a hallway at Patterson High School, said Sgt. Clyde Boatwright, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Baltimore School Police Lodge 5. He did not release the name of the minor but told the Baltimore Sun the student is enrolled in Baltimore City Public Schools.
“No one was injured in the brief struggle,” Boatwright said, according to WBAL-TV. After taking the student into custody, they found a loaded semi-automatic firearm in his waistband, he added.
The student was arrested for possession of a loaded handgun on school grounds, the newspaper reported. News outlets also reported Boatwright wrote on Facebook that the student was wanted for “at least one attempted murder (nonfatal shooting).”
“This morning, a student at Patterson High School was arrested by City Schools Police for a criminal violation. During this incident, a weapon was recovered,” the school district said in an statement after the arrest. “… Under City Schools’ student Code of Conduct, a student who brings a weapon on school grounds faces the maximum consequences, including possible permanent expulsion.”
Baltimore Police spokesman Detective Jeremy Silbert said the student is a possible person of interest in a nonfatal shooting. If the student is charged and booked, Silbert said, the department will release additional information.
At least one other student has been arrested at Patterson High School in the past two years for having a weapon. A teenager was charged as an adult last year in the stabbing of another student.
