GATES, Ore. (AP) - Members of law enforcement killed a 27-year-old Bend man after he allegedly robbed two businesses at gunpoint, stole a car and fled, authorities said.
Linn County Sheriff Jim Yon said the shooting happened before midnight Tuesday on Highway 22 northwest of Bend.
KTVZ-TV reports law enforcement responded a man robbed a Dutch Bros Coffee shop and a Domino’s Pizza at gunpoint, according to Deschutes County sheriff’s Sgt. Jayson Janes.
The man, identified by the Salem Police Department as Brad Masters, allegedly robbed the coffee shop on foot and at Domino’s also stole an employee’s car, Janes said.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies pursued the vehicle west on Highway 22 but stopped near Santiam Pass and alerted other law enforcement.
The vehicle eventually was stopped with spike strips near Gates, police said. Masters allegedly exited the vehicle, “a confrontation ensued,” and three Oregon State Police troopers and a Linn County deputy fired shots, according to the Salem Police Department, which is leading an investigation into the incident.
Masters was declared deceased at the scene, according to Salem police. No further information was released about the confrontation.
Oregon State Police troopers Caleb Yoder, Michael Iacob, and Joseph Sousa, and Linn County deputy Brandon Rathelegurche fired their weapons. They are on administrative leave pending investigation results, police said.
