PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Officials with Maine’s largest city said Tuesday they will add dozens of new beds to the city’s homeless shelter capacity for the coming winter.
Portland officials said the city will operate the municipally run Oxford Street Shelter as well as a hotel property. The city will add capacity via another hotel it will have access to via a partnership with MaineHousing, officials said.
The city estimated the number of beds this winter will be 293, which is up from 229 in previous years. Portland officials previously announced a plan to increase the amount of shelter beds available this winter while also observing precautions related to the coronavirus pandemic.
