CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - A 73-year-old Rhode Island man faces a murder charge in the shooting death of his girlfriend’s adult son, police said.
Charles Gangi shot and killed 41-year-old Paul Zois on Tuesday during what was described by police as a “heated argument” in the Cranston home they shared, Chief Col. Michael Winquist said.
Gangi was held without bail at his arraignment Wednesday. He did not enter pleas to felony charges including first-degree murder, which is customary in district court. No defense attorney was listed in court records and he was referred to the public defender’s office.
Police found Zois unconscious and suffering from gunshot wounds shortly before 3 p.m. He was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital, authorities said.
Zois’ mother and aunt, who also lived in the home, were present when the shooting occurred but were not injured, the chief said.
Police recovered two guns at the scene, including one they suspect was used in the shooting, he said.
Gangi us due back in court on Jan. 7.
