VELDA CITY, Mo. (AP) - A St. Louis County man facing first-degree murder charges in the Christmas Day deaths of his ex-girlfriend and her toddler daughter has been found dead inside a home after a lengthy standoff with police.

Timothy Brown’s body was discovered Tuesday night when St. Louis County police sent a robot into the home in Velda City.

Police spokesman Benjamin Granda said Brown died of a gunshot to the head. Police believe it was self-inflicted. Officers did not fire any shots at the suspect, and no one else was in the home, Granda said.

Granda said detectives searching for Brown went to the home just before 4 p.m. Tuesday. The detectives were speaking to a woman when they came under gunfire.

Police took the woman from the home and began urging Brown to come out. After hours of negotiation by phone and loudspeaker, police sent a robot into the home and Brown was found dead. It was unclear when he died.

Granda said police did not use force of any kind.

Brown, 30, was accused of killing 28-year-old Charese Garvin and her 23-month-old daughter, Alayah Butler. Officers found their bodies Friday night. Brown was charged Monday and police searching for him warned he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Charging documents say witnesses saw Brown at the house where the bodies were found. Witnesses told police Brown had threatened to kill Garvin.
