PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police officers investigating a homicide fatally shot a man who had just shot and wounded a police dog inside an apartment, a Police Department spokeswoman said Thursday.

The incident occurred after officers were directed to an apartment after police responding to a report of gunshots found the homicide victim’s body nearby at about 3:40 a.m., Sgt. Ann Justus said.

Five officers shot the armed man when he came out of the apartment with a gun after shooting the police dog, which is is expected to make a full recovery, Justus said.

The dog had entered the apartment ahead of officers who went back outside after the man opened fire, wounding the dog, Justus said. “He saved the lives of all of our officers out here today.”

It wasn’t immediately confirmed the man killed by police had killed the homicide victim, Justus said. “That’s certainly one of the possibilities that investigators are looking into.”“

No identities were released.
