Judges love to think of themselves as uniquely endowed with the ability to reach ultimate truth. “Judge won’t try black man in court room with white portraits” (Web, Dec. 22) reads like a college essay. It contains no empirical data, as though the writer’s feelings were a proper substitute for evidence. Also, it raises this question: Why does the judge have the authority to decorate “his” courtroom? This is a public building. The judge just works there. Does he also have the right to hang pictures of his own choosing?
