MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) - Young adults in the Newport area who need mental health help have a new resource.
Newport Mental Health’s new Young Adult Center in Middletown opened earlier this month, The Newport Daily News reports.
It will specialize in mental health services - such as services for major depression or anxiety disorders - for young adults between the ages of 16 and 25. The center also offers the Emergency Suicide Prevention program, which provides specific interventions for suicide, along with housing and employment supports.
The average onset of serious mental illness symptoms occurs between the ages of 18 and 26, Jamie Lehane, president and CEO of Newport Mental Health said in a statement.
“We’re seeing that the sooner someone receives treatment, the sooner they will recover,” Lehane said. “Sadly, people often wait 10 years or more from the time they begin experiencing symptoms of serious adult mental illness to receiving treatment.”
