AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Wildlife officials in Maine are asking fishermen to use “extreme caution” during the state’s ice fishing season this year.
Ice fishing is a popular winter activity in Maine, and the season typically gets going in early January. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said fishermen should always use a chisel or an auger to test the thickness of the ice in several places before fishing.
Ice seldom freezes uniformly and conditions can vary from one location to the next, the department said. Anglers should always tell someone their schedule before a day of ice fishing, it said.
Maine has more than 6,000 lakes and ponds.
